Week of November 9 - 13 - Welcome to Design 7/8/9

Welcome to Design Studies!!!  Design 7/8/9 involves the exploration of the cycle below:

Design 7 and 8

This week in Design 7 and 8, students got into Design Squads to face a series of 4 design challenges.  Winning a challenge earns points for your squad which will be tallied after all 4 challenges to come up with a winner for each class.

The first challenge they faced involved creating a paper table using 8 sheets of newspaper, masking tape, one piece of cardboard.  The table must be able to hold the 3 pound recipe book for 5 seconds and be at least 8 inches tall.  The winners of this challenge met these standards, and made it all the way to 5 heavy recipe books before toppling over.

The next challenge involved making something that will carry a ping pong ball down a 10 foot zipline in the fastest time.  The ping pong ball cannot be concealed and cannot fall out at the end.  This challenge was finished today.  Grade 7 and 8  top 3 teams are listed below going into the final paddle boat challenge:

Grade 8

1st place - Minh, Kevin, Rayyaan, Arjun - 8 pts

2nd place  -  Mila, Ray, Keaton, Davi  - 6 points - 7 points

3rd place tie- Kael, Reagan, Liam - 5 points

Hunter and Ben - 5 points

Grade 7

1st place - Max, Heath, Haameem, Dexter, Jordan- 11

2nd place - Lauralie, Vivian W., Samiha, Yashi - 8

3rd place tie - Ryder, Quinn, Jayten, Yassin - 3

Sophie, Scotia, Amelia, Ceana - 3

Tevin, Nate, Mindo, Mohammed  - 3

Next week:  Challenges will include making a watercraft to hold at least 25 marbles and a boat that is propelled by paddle power to move across a tub.

Design 9

Design 9 has started right into our rod puppet project.  This is an extensive project that will take us up to 6 weeks.

Project Summary

Students will be creating a rod puppet inspired by the traditional Indonesian rod puppets

they have learned about. To begin, they will create the world that your character exists in,

including the setting, background, and context of who and what they are. They will then,

either in partners or independently, create a narrative that their character experiences.

They will be choosing one scene from this narrative, and filming a monologue that

reflects the puppet’s point of view. This week, students started to develop their character

and story line. Next week, we will begin the design process for the puppet.

Week of November 2 - 6

Thanks to all the Design 7/8/9/students in the first rotation of the CTF wheel this year. It was a blast working with you.

"Creativity takes courage." ~ Henri Matisse

Thank you for all the risks you took, and for all the amazing things you created.

Week of October 26-30

Design/ Recreational Leadership 7

Check out our completed city of Hillwood!  704 did an amazing job creating all the essential services as well as a very unique little neighborhood.

We finished our week with some Halloween spirit activities like writing school announcements, making posters and creating a Halloween trivia game for homerooms to play.  We also learned some basic handsewing stitches and made little Halloween beanie bags.  Next week is our last week of Design, and we will be diving into a couple of Design Challenges to see what we have learned about the Design Process.

Design 8

This week in Design 8, students worked on their cross stitching projects to make bookmarks that we will be donating at Christmas to some senior citizens.  Check out the ones that are completed so far...

Next week is our last week of Design, and we will be diving into a couple of Design Challenges to see what we have learned about the Design Process.

Design 9

We are in the final stages of our Famous Structures project.  The building is due on Friday, November 6.  We will be doing a gallery walk on Monday for our final class to admire the work done by other grade 9s in Art and Music during this first option class, as well as showcase our puppets and famous structures.  Here is a sample of some of the buildings in the final stages of design:  Leaning Tower of Pisa, Empire State Building, Great Wall of China, Gateway Arch and Antique Theatre D'Orange in France.

Week of October 19-23

Design/ Recreational Leadership 7

Our city continues to grow!  We are nearing the end of the construction phase of our city build and will soon move on to the city planning and design.  We have had some good discussions about where certain buildings should go, how the roads should run, and where to best place the airport and the city dump!

We have also designed some awesome Halloween posters for our homeroom classes, written and recorded announcements for the school about Halloween and are working to complete a Kahoot game for classes to play on October 29.  Busy, busy, busy...

Design 8

We have completed our mask making unit and all students have at least one colorful mask that they have designed and created.  They learned a lot during this unit and had many opportunities to problem solve and re-evaluate their work as things came up in their process.  Next week we will be doing a cross stitching project to make bookmarks to donate to our community.

Design 9

Our Famous Structures project is taking shape.  Here is a sample of some of the buildings being created.  I am impressed by the attention to detail and the creative use of supplies to meet the architectural demands of these replicas.  We will continue to work on this project until the end of our term on November 10.

Week of October 13 - 16

Design 7

We are well underway in creating our city.  Here is a picture of what we have created so far.  Stay tuned!!

Design 8

This week we have started to sew our own masks.  The students have chosen some really awesome fabrics for this project.  Each student will sew 2 masks before they move on to an independent project of their choice to finish our sewing unit.

Design 9

We finished watching our rod puppet videos and have moved on to start a Famous Structures project.  Here is our bulletin board with some of the puppets we made.

Week of October 5 - 9

Design 7

This week in Design 7, we finished up our websites and digital maps of our cities.  These grade 7s did an amazing job.  Their technological wizardry was impressive.  We then moved on to build one big city out of recycled materials.  We will follow through on this project until the end of this rotation.  I will post pictures as the city development progresses.

Design 8

This week in Design 8, we started learning how to use the sewing machines.  We have learned the different parts of the machine and how to thread the needle and wind the bobbin.  We will start working with fabric soon with the end goal of making our own cloth masks.

Design 9

In Design 9, we continue to work on our rod puppet project.  Students have completed their puppet and are rehearsing a narrative for filming.  The puppets are amazing and I have been very impressed with the attention to detail and commitment to this project so far.
